Hello, Bestie!
What an eventful week it has been. We witnessed the unfortunate exit of the Super Falcons from the FIFA Women's World Cup, and on a brighter note, Josh2Funny graced the stage of "America's Got Talent." Interestingly, Spotify also revealed that Nigerian artistes generated 11 Bllion naira, last year. It's safe to say, this week has been filled with twists and turns. Today, we're serving up all the spiciest details for you. Enjoy while it’s hot.
1. First of All, Happy Birthday HipHop.

On August 11, 1973, Dj Kool Herc organized a party at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York. This event is considered as the “birth” of HipHop as it marked the start of a cultural movement that will later encompass elements like MCing (rapping), DJing, Breakdancing and Graffiti arts.
HipHop would eventually become a global phenomenon and notably one of the major influences of Afrobeats culture and music. In the late ’90s, groups like Trybesmen and Plantashun Boiz led the Hip-Hop and R&B wave. This continued into the 2000s with artists like Eedris Abdulkareem, Olu Maintain, Sound Sultan and 2face Idibia. These artistes heavily infused elements of rap to their lyrical and rhythmic flow. The beats and instrumentations of some popular songs from that era were Hip-Hop inspired too. This trend persisted into the late 2000s, with “classic” albums like Wande Coal’s “Mushin 2 Mohits,” D’banj’s “Entertainer” and 9ice’s “Gongo Aso” manifesting shades of rap’s impact.
Outside the studio, Afrobeats’ music videos, fashion, and visual aesthetics also echo hip-hop’s influence.

While celebrating Hip-Hop’s legacy, it’s crucial to recognize the Nigerian rappers who have upheld its torch throughout the years. Today, we pay special respect to Trybesmen, Ruggedman, Eedris Abdulkareem, Eldee, Modenine, Illbliss, MI Abaga, Jesse Jagz, Ice Prince, Da Grin, Olamide, Phyno, Vector, Reminisce, ShowDemCamp, Ladipoe, Blaqbonez, A-Q, Alpha Ojini, Payper Corleone, Loose Kaynon, Cheque, Odumodublvck, Psycho YP, Vader The Wildcard, Falz, Ycee, Naeto C, Eva Alordiah, Skales, Erigga, Sasha P, Weird MC, Dremo, Yung6ix, Chinko Ekun, Davolee, Naira Marley, Zlatan, CDQ, Mr Raw, Ikechukwu, Lil Kesh, Boogey, Paybac, SGawd, Mojo, PDSTRN & more.
Happy Birthday, HIP-HOP.
2. Nigerian Artistes Generated 11 Billion Naira From Spotify Alone, Last Year.

When next you see artiste, bill am🥲
A new report from Spotify reveals that, “In 2022, revenues generated by Nigerian artists from Spotify alone reached over 11,000,000,000 NGN. While Nigerian music industry revenues overall have grown 63% from 2021 to 2022 (according to IFPI), revenues generated by Nigerian artists – from Spotify alone – grew 74% over this same time period.”
The report further stated that, “The number of Nigerian artists who generated more than 5M NGN and 10M NGN in royalties from Spotify alone has increased by nearly 25% over the last year. This figure represents revenue generated from Spotify alone, and does not take into account earnings from other services and recorded revenue streams, concert tickets or merch.”
While streaming revenue remains a non-sustainable income source for a large chunk of artistes especially independent emerging acts, revenues are going up rapidly as the Afrobeats movement keeps expanding. Additionally, a larger pool of artists are achieving notable streaming numbers and revenue, potentially due to increased exposure and quality of content.
In addition to the data on the revenues, there is also new data on:
Top exported Afrobeats albums
Top exported Afrobeats artists
Top exported Afrobeats tracks
Top exported female Afrobeats tracks
Some of the top cities, outside of Lagos, where Afrobeats is getting the most streams are London, Paris, Abuja, Nairobi, Amsterdam and Accra.

This past Monday held a distinct air. As some prepared for the workweek, many were fixated on TVs, phones, and screens along Admiralty Way, Lekki, Lagos. The Nigerian Women's Football Team (Super Falcons) faced England's Lionesses in the Round of 16 Knockout match at the 2023 FIFA World Cup.

The match ended with a 0-0 score after regular time. However, England's Lionesses triumphed over Nigeria 4-2 in the penalty shootout, to the disappointment of many Nigerians. Despite the outcome, the game was a blockbuster, and the internet buzzed with updates and reactions.

Important Note: FIFPRO, the global representative organization for footballers, issued a statement indicating its support for the Nigerian women's team. They are aiding the team's efforts to secure unpaid wages since 2021 from the country's football federation (NFF). Ahead of the Women's World Cup, Nigeria had been in dispute with the NFF over pay and working conditions. Coach Randy Waldrum reported being owed seven months' wages, and some players hadn't received payment for two years.
